EED Student Wins Award for Paper
May 17, 2018 – Theresa Green, a doctoral student in the Department of Engineering Education Department at Utah State University (USU), was recently honored with the Best Paper Award at the 2018 Illinois-Indiana Section Conference of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). The paper, entitled “Research to Practice: Leveraging Concept Inventories in Statics Instruction,” was co-authored by Green and her undergraduate research advisor, Dr. Ruth E. H. Wertz, Assistant Professor of General Engineering at Valparaiso University.
Theresa Green - PhD Student Engineering Education
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Green completed her Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Valparaiso University, located in Valparaiso, Indiana, in 2016. Green joined the Engineering Education program at USU in 2017. Green is concurrently pursuing both a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education at USU.
As part of her engineering education degree program, Green is conducting research in support of an engineering education research project that is funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is a collaborative effort between researchers in the College of Engineering and the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at USU. Entitled “Learning from Engineers to Develop a Model of Disciplinary Literacy in Engineering,” the project is led by Dr. Amy Wilson-Lopez of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership and Green’s Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Angela Minichiello, of the Department of Engineering Education. The goal of the project is to develop authentic materials, evaluative frameworks, and practices, based on disciplinary literacy instruction, that K-16 teachers and instructors can use to support a diverse body of students in learning engineering.
